How to Write Better Instagram Captions for Your Cannabiz
By: Rachel Garland
What's the first thing you notice on a Instagram post?
Probably the image right?
After all, Instagram is a visual-centric platform. Filters, aesthetics, and creative effects fit all right at home here.
But what draws you into a post?
Chances are, it's the caption.
Writing a good post is key to:
Building Better Relationships
Growing Your Cannabiz
In fact, while the right picture will certainly attract your target audience, a well-written caption inspires action. Whether you want to increase your followers, get more likes, or triple sales from last quarter - marketing your cannabiz on Instagram requires the ability to write captivating captions.
Great Visuals + Great Captions = Great Storytelling
However, let's be real, writing a solid message can also be overwhelming. 😶
You might be at a loss for words, even with a 2,200 character limit (note: not words) per post.
Rest assured, these feelings are 100% normal.
This is coming from a copywriter!
Over time, though, I've learned some helpful tips that have made this process easier.
If you're struggling with what to say, psyched out by the idea of writing, or searching for simple tips to share your message...
I want to share with you 5 of my favorite tips for writing better Instagram captions for your cannabiz.
#1. Use Clear, Simple Text
Did you know the average person only has the attention span of 8 seconds?
Wild but true!
If your message is not engaging within the first second or two, onto the next. People prioritize what is important to them.
Make your message count!
The most important part of your post should be included within the first 1-3 sentences.
Otherwise, you risk your message not being read at all.
One helpful tip is to write as if you were speaking to a friend. Instagram is considered a social media platform for a reason. So keep it casual.
Always have your target audience in mind.
Your tone should consistent across channels. People should easily be able to recognize your brand, whether on Instagram or Twitter, for example.
One of the most powerful advantages you can have is embracing your brand's unique identity. THIS is what will attract the right audience to you. It's not something that can be replicated.
The clearer you are on your intent, purpose, and impact - the easier it will be to convey your message.
#2. Incorporate Strategic Hashtags
If you want more people to interact with your posts on Instagram, hashtags are vital.
In fact, hashtags put your content directly in front of your target audience's eyes, all without paying for advertising.
In any industry (but especially) in the cannabis industry, this is GAME CHANGING!
We're already facing huge advertising restrictions. Hashtags are one of the few ways we can still organically increase visibility.
However, you don't want to just use any hashtag…
You want to use the hashtags your target audience is actually using.
How can you determine this?
Here are 2 quick yet highly effective ways to find the best hashtags for your cannabiz.
Head to the explore section on Instagram and search for hashtags
See what hashtags are popular and what type of accounts are using them
Are these accounts part of your target audience?
If the answer is YES, add this hashtag
Note: Use a mix of popular hashtags like #cannabis and more specific hashtags that describe the photo like #cbdinfused to increase your reach.
Go to your followers
Click an account who engages with you frequently
What hashtags are they using?
Make note of the hashtags used most frequently
Incorporate hashtags when relevant
I recommend keeping a list of hashtags you can easily refer to. This way, you can pull from this list when you're searching for tags to use.
Note though that you will want to vary the type of hashtags you're using.
Including the same hashtags repetitively can cause Instagram to flag or remove your account because it considers this type of behavior spammy.
#3. Add Relevant Emojis
Bring your message to life with cleverly placed emojis. 😘💨
It is estimated that over 50% of Instagram captions or comments contain at least one or more emojis. Fun, vibrant, and attention-grabbing, these digital images are essential to storytelling.
With over 100 emojis at your disposal, there are countless ways to elevate your captions.
And just in case you're curious, here's a full-scale library of emojis. (It's really handy for those times when you're on a desktop.)
The key with emojis, as with any messaging, keep it authentic to your voice and mission.
There is no one size fits all here.
So get creative and have fun with it! 🌈
#4. Include Calls-to-Action (CTAs)
Do you want to convert followers into customers?
It's time to start using the power of persuasion with Calls-to-Action or CTA.
What's a CTA?
A Call-to-Action is a statement that prompts someone to take an action.
Think of things like:
Get 30% Off Using Code
Book an Appointment
A good CTA is compelling and direct, speaking directly to your target audience's needs.
Is your cannabiz struggling with compliance? Call now for a FREE 30-minute consultation with our team.
This statement is simple. Yet, it spells out exactly in store - a 30-minute compliance consultation.
Notice how the CTA also creates a sense of urgency?
It does not say "Call" or "Call Anytime" but "Call Now"
If an offer is always available, it’s unlikely to draw immediate action.
Focus on creating clear, specific, and time-limited offers to make the most impact.
#5. Ask for Feedback
Instagram made some major updates to its algorithm in 2018.
One of those major changes involved a bigger emphasis on the relationship between users.
Hence why you're more likely seeing a lot of familiar faces on your feed. With posts not being displayed in real time, it's increasingly becoming important to make sure people are actually seeing your posts.
One way you can increase engagement by inspiring conversation.
Some creative options include:
Fill in the Blanks
Tag a Friend
Get to know your followers on a more personal level by asking them to interact with you.
But make sure you take time to respond back!
Instagram is more likely to increase the reach of your post if it appears popular. Not to mention quality relationships depend on genuine interactions.
A simple but thoughtful message can make all the difference in a world.
