Earning a living as a cannabis influencer might have seemed like a fantasy a few years ago.

But that’s no longer the case!

In fact, in an environment where advertising restrictions are rampant, the opportunities for cannabis influencers are enormous. Whether you’re passionate about cannabis and yoga, cannabis and cooking, cannabis and wellness - you can get paid for doing what you love.

For the skeptics out there, this isn’t just a bunch of fluff.

It’s a real thing that’s happening every single day.

I’m speaking from personal experience here.

About two and half years ago I launched Women of Cannabiz. Through this platform and the relationships I’ve built, I’ve now been able to connect with cannabis women worldwide, receive free products, tickets, promotions, along with selling advertising space.

This is just the beginning!

While becoming a cannabis influencer might seem just like it’s all taking dope shots and planning content, there’s much more to this career path than meets the eye.

Successful influencers are strategic.

They’re authentic to their message and practical in their approach.

I want to share with you step by step how you can become a cannabis influencer.

Keep reading for the full breakdown.

Why Do You Want to Be a Cannabis Influencer?

If you want to be a cannabis influencer, clarity is key.

The most important question every single person who wants to become an influencer needs to ask themselves is - WHY?

Why do you want to become an influencer?

  • Do you want to share your story and uplift others?

  • Get paid to promote products?

  • Attract a lot of attention on social media?

You need to be brutally honest with yourself.

What are your intentions of becoming a cannabis influencer?

If you want to impact the world, you need to seriously consider what that impact is going to be. We have an incredible chance to help influence how the world sees cannabis.

It’s up to each of us to use our talents, gifts, and abilities to influence others in a meaningful way.

If you want to truly become influential, you need to understand why you’re here.

And only you know the answer to that question.

So dig deep.

If you are struggling - step back, quiet your mind, and let go.

Make the space that you need and the right answer will come to you.

What You Need to Do to Become a Cannabis Influencer

Becoming a cannabis influencer is not an overnight process.

You need to build trust with your audience and share your message. Doing that in a meaningful way isn’t going to happen immediately.

I actually waited an entire year before monetizing Women of Cannabiz.

Meanwhile, I was sharing content consistently and freelancing my butt off to get more experience and network.

Patience combined with strategy will lead you on the right path.

I want to share with you 10 steps you can take to not just be a cannabis blogger but a paid influencer who is building a brand you love while making a real impact.

#1 Find a Niche You’re Passionate About

Step one to becoming a cannabis influencers is finding your niche.

While cannabis may already seem like a niche, this industry is enormous!

Here is a just a quick glance at some of the different areas in this space:

Truth be told, this list is not even scratching the surface.

Positioning yourself as an expert within a in field is the best way to become an influencer.

After all, if you’re going to influence others, what are you going to influence them about?

A lot of people try and say they are a cannabis influencer without standing for or specializing in anything. Set yourself apart by owning your niche.

Not sure what the best option is?

Go with the things that excite you the most and where your strengths are!

Don’t try and reinvent the wheel.

Use what you have and expand from there.

#2 Identify People Who Need What You’re Offering

Once you’ve narrowed your niche, it’s time to find your tribe.

Building an authentic, engaged community is the difference between a consumer and an user and an influencer.

Keep in mind your goal should not be to build as big of a community as possible.

While growing and reaching more people is important! (and something to be celebrated 🎉💕)

Don’t get obsessed about the numbers.

It is better to have 10,000 real fans who actually want to hear from you than 100,000 fake fans.

If you’re truly aligned with your vision, purpose, and define your niche….

Not everyone is going to dig what you’re putting down.

Guess what?

That means you’re on the right path.

You don’t want to attract everyone, you want to attract the right people.

Understanding who your audience is and how you can help them is key to your success.

#3 Develop a strong Brand Identity

The third step to becoming a cannabis influencer is developing a brand identity.

What’s a brand identity?

A brand identity is how customers perceive your business.

Your identity embodies all of the values, mission, services, products, ideals, and aesthetics that represent your business.

AKA what makes your company unique!

Determining your brand’s identity from the beginning will ensure you’re building the foundation to grow a real business from.

I’ve actually put together a FREE Canna Brand Identity Guide 📗🌈 to make this process even easier!

Using this guide you will learn how to:

  • Differentiate Your Brand

Taking the time to establish your brand’s identity will position you as an expert and fuel long-term growth.

#4 Build Your Presence on Multiple Platforms

Do you know what one of the smartest things you can do if you want to build an influential cannabis brand is?

Develop your presence across platforms.

Too many people make the mistake of relying too heavily on a single platform to reach their audience.

Even if your audience is massive on Instagram, or YouTube, Facebook - etc. you should NEVER rely on a single outlet.

Your business needs a website. No matter how “big” you are on social.

Social media is a powerful advertising tool.

And if you’re working as an influencer, it’s probably also going to be one of the largest sources of your revenue.

Never put all of your eggs into one basket.

Things can change on a dime.

Whether a platform starts censoring more cannabis content (like we’ve seen happen at this point on just about every social media channel) or users leave a platform over time, you need to have a way to always get in touch with your community.

Hence why it is so important to diversify your reach as much as possible.

#5 Share Meaningful Content

The fifth step you’ll want to take towards becoming a cannabis influencer is sharing meaningful content.

If you’re going to make your mark, you need to bring something to the table.

I recommend doubling down on your strengths:

  • Are you an awesome photographer?

  • How about a gifted writer?

  • Or what about a great video editor?

Whatever “IT” IS - OWN IT.

Then find a way to help others doing it.

You can become influential in whatever field you want. Truly!

Whether you want to be known as the craft cannabis photographer or a cannabis wellness writer, the opportunities are out there.

It is up to you to consistently share valuable content (blogs, videos, graphics, etc.) that will attract your target audience.

Not sure what to post?

I have you covered!

Remember, it doesn’t need to be perfect.

It just needs to be real.

#6 Engage with Your Target Audience

If you share meaningful content, over time, you will attract your target audience.

Sharing content is only one part of the process.

Building a great community relies on relationship building. Providing value for your audience will lead them to you.

However, if you want them to stay, you need to show up.

Engaging with your audience by responding, liking, following, and commenting back shows that you care.

And people notice.

Working as an influencer is a 24/7 job.

Yes, take breaks for your mental health. We all need to step away from our work. It’s vital.

Being an influencer means you’re there for your audience.

It means waking up at 6 and responding to comments and staying up until midnight planning content because you genuinely care about the people you’re influencing.

If this all sounds too much, then I wouldn’t set your intentions on becoming an influencer.

It is fun work but it is not easy work.

Don’t get it twisted.

But if you truly love your community and the people you’re impacting, you”ll want to be there.

#7 Consistently Provide Value

Showing up for your community is HUGE!

If you continue to do this, regardless of how large your community grows, the impact will be enormous.

Even so, you also need to provide value.

What do I mean by this?

Be helpful for your target audience.

Regularly share things like:

  • Useful Tips

  • Inspiring Posts

  • Handy Resources

  • Entertaining Videos

  • Relevant Surveys

  • Informative Guides

Aim to create a space where your fans can’t wait to see what’s next!

The more content you provide, the more value you offer.

I know this might sound like a lot but you should be sharing content daily. Yes, life happens and it’s ok to step away. However! I’m not going to B.S. Working as an influencer is difficult.

Building your business is 100% your responsibility.

If you’re not sharing content regularly you're not going to stay relevant.

The key is to not overthink it! Experiment and remember to have fun. 💃💚

You”ll find your way!

#8 Create a Media Kit

This eighth step towards becoming a cannabis influencer is hands down one of the most important.

It’s actually what separates a social media consumer versus an influencer.

And that’s a Media Kit!

If you’re thinking right now, what in the world is a media kit….😶

Don’t sweat it!

I was in the same place a few years ago.

So, let me break this down:

A Media Kit contains all of the relevant stats, information, and details about your business advertisers would want to know about.

It should include things like your audience demographics, topics you post about, and how large your following is.

Think of your Media Kit as your virtual pitch.

Why is a Media Kit so important?

If you want to get paid for your work and start making your passion a legitimate gig, it’s important to show marketers the value you provide.

#9 Contact Brands Directly

Do you want to earn a full time living as a cannabis influencer?

If so, get comfortable with contacting brands directly.

And straight up, it’s going to be an uphill battle in the beginning.

If there are products, services, and brands you genuinely love - start reaching out to them directly.

You never know what could happen!

Keep in mind it is a numbers game.

So if you don’t get a response (which is initially going to happen a lot) hang in there.

Good things take time to grow. And everyone has to start somewhere.🌱👩‍🌾

Keep sharing great content, engage with your audience, and reach out to brands you genuinely want to work and your community will flourish,

#10 Grow Your Network

Last but certainly not least when it comes to becoming a cannabis influencer is growing your network, online and off.

Even if you have a huge audience….

If you love what you’re doing….

There’s always more people you can impact!

Find ways to build your fan base.

Whether that means going to a conference or jumping on a Skype call, there are countless ways to build your cannabis brand.

The key is to get creative and get out there!

When you’re working as an influencer, relationship building is a full time job.

The more connections you make, the more lives you are changing.

If you ask me,

At the end of the day, that is what being an influencer is all about.

Stay Patient and Don’t Settle for Short Term Gains

There is one last note I want to leave you with.

If you have your intentions set on becoming a cannabis influencer, know that it is possible.

Yes, it will require focus, dedication, and passion.

But you have those things.

You are more than capable!

So don’t settle for the short term!

If you want to build an influential brand, be selective.

Don’t work with every brand that contacts you. Only work with the businesses you genuinely believe your audience will benefit from.

Trust takes time to develop.

When your audience sees that you care and have their best interests at heart, your influence will be amplified.
