Budtender to budding entrepreneur, Shea Wineck is the founder of Life Flower Care, a family owned and operated business based in Orange County, California. Life Flower provides high-vibrational, earth-derived, wellness products. From CBD crystal bath bombs to infused massage oils, each item is handcrafted consciously with organic, ethically sourced ingredients. Shea was moved to launch the company after experiencing consistently poor quality and mislabeled cannabis products. She noticed that while many items were advertised as "all-natural", additives and synthetic ingredients were often included. Shea was determined to offer consumers a different option. Life Flower specializes in eco-friendly, 100% natural, and high vibrational products. A commitment to quality, every item is guaranteed to contain zero artificial fragrances, chemicals or preservatives.
What inspired you to enter the cannabis industry?
Since I was a child, I knew I wanted to help people in some way. I remember being about 11 years old and reading the newspaper in tears. I wondered how I could possibly make a difference in such a big, dark world.
I moved out to LA from Canada when I turned 19. Honestly, I didn't really know what I was doing. But I knew I wanted to be a part of the growing cannabis industry. Cannabis brought me out of a very dark time in my life, it felt like a miracle at the time. I gained lost weight/appetite back. I was reconnecting with myself and nature on a whole new level. I had also fell out of the depression I had been stuck in for about 4 years.
I could feel the healing powers of the plant and I knew they were endless.
Tell us more about launching Life Flower Care
I got my first job at a dispensary in DTLA and was so excited to start working. Coming from Canada, where it was next to impossible to find a dispensary, I had a fairytale image of what I thought it was going to be like. For the people, all about the medicine and healing capabilities of the plant, etc.. But as soon as I got there my dream shattered.
My boss told me our job was to "take all the patient's money" and I was horrified. The whole thing was a hustle. I began looking at the products that I was to sell to these people looking to me for honesty and help, some packaging didn't even have the ingredients listed and the ones that did were all made with very questionable ingredients. The balms had chemical fragrances and preservatives or smelt like weed, the edibles had insane sugar levels and excessive food dyes.
I remember thinking to myself, "why are all these manufacturers mixing such a healing plant with complete garbage?" The idea of Life Flower was born at that moment and came into fruition about a year later.
What type of cannabis products do you offer?
Life Flower offers high-vibrational, earth-derived, wellness products. We don't believe in isolating THC or CBD, but rather pairing it with other beneficial, healing ingredients that work together synergistically. Currently we offer infused crystal bath bombs, pain relief balm, massage oils, bath crystals, and essential oil roll on elixirs geared toward treating different ailments like anxiety, headaches, menstrual cramps and insomnia with many more products in the works.
How has cannabis influenced your life?
Cannabis has changed my life in so many ways.
It has influenced me to be my authentic self, something that was always hard for me to express. It taught me how to relax and how to let things go, reconnected me with my love for nature and plants. And perhaps most importantly, myself and my health.
Cannabis was the reason I moved to California to follow my dreams, and am now living them all out. I've met some of my best and closest friends while working different jobs in the industry. These people have had a huge impact on both the success and growth of Life Flower.
I don't even know where I would be or what I would be doing if I didn't connect with the cannabis plant.
What have been your biggest hurdles operating in the cannabis industry so far?
The biggest hurdle has definitely been keeping up with regulations and trying to stay compliant with all these new rules that LA pushed out this year.
How have you been able to overcome these challenges?
We overcame these challenges by formulating a hemp infused line, separate from our cannabis infused line. This allows us to sell our products online and distribute them all over while we wait for the legal cannabis market to fully regulate.
Name the top 3 skills every cannabis entrepreneur needs
Time Management - This is something every entrepreneur in general needs, it can be easy to get caught up in your day to day. Social media, house errands etc. I usually have a strict routine that I follow to keep me 100% productive all the time.
Networking - Having the ability to socialize and ask people questions/share your own story. It's a very small industry and everyone in it has something to offer. There's a really strong, competitive vibe sometimes in LA and a big part of socializing with our fellow entrepreneurs is seeing that we can all succeed in this industry. It doesn't have to be a competition.
Focus - It can often feel like you're in too deep, at least I know I've felt that way at times. When I get overwhelmed, I look at what brought me here and I know deep in my heart that it is both my passion and purpose.
What is the best advice you've received recently?
Waking up with the sun and meditating for at least 30 minutes before starting my day. It's hard at the start, but once incorporated into your routine, it will change your life! Not only does it make your day feel way longer but I've found how you start your morning is how the rest of your day will follow... so starting it slowly with some meditative music and stretching while setting your intentions ensures a calm, organized state of mind throughout the rest of the day.
Any tips for maintaining a work/life balance?
Setting routines and a strict schedule. For example, I set 3 alarms every work day to check my phone, reply to people and answer emails/DMs about Life Flower. Other than that, I am not on my phone! I have a certain day of each week that I do certain things both for our business and for our house, this ensures that I'm not wasting time in between either on my phone or around the house.
What are your favorite resources/tools for your business and why?
My favorite tools are definitely all my books! I have educated myself intensely on Herbalism, RSO, the endocannabinoid system, TCM, Ayurveda, healing crystals and essential oils. I have learned so much from them and I put all of it into our products. I believe the reason our products are so effective is because we use so many other beneficial ingredients.
If you could offer an aspiring cannabis entrepreneur one piece of advice, what would it be?
Network! The more people you know in this industry, the better. It's a small world and knowing people in certain places will make a big difference. And also to trust your intuition... about anything.
